TO OUR REGULAR PROGRAMMING
WHO ARE WE?
HNGER is a total remake of original Black Widow's Games Half-Life modification - They Hunger, which was released back in the late 90's.
Since then there were three oficially confirmed episodes of the original series, while after the birth of Half-Life 2 and the Source engine along with it, the developer behind They Hunger started to work with a sequel called They Hunger: Lost Souls, which development was unfortunately halted without a particular reason.
Instead of undertaking the job to complete Lost Souls development, we aim to recreate original mod's feel on the Source engine and "solve the puzzle" from scratch so that HNGER is going to keep up with modern first person shooter standards.
That said, we are not just porting the game to this branch and calling it good - we're redesigning it completely.
► we are redesigning the whole scenario to keep it "glued" with keeping the original plot, locations, characters without ripping any essentials,
► the voices, sounds, visual effects, models and much more are made completely from scratch,
► the modification is getting a stunning level design to recreate and fulfill the original horror feel of They Hunger series,
► the single-player experience is going to be tweaked so that that the game will keep up with the modern FPS standards,
► instead of using level-design based animation, important in-game sequences will be represented as cutscenes,
THE ROCKWELL COUNTY
Back in the 1999, Neil Manke and the creative team at Black Widow Games developed a three part mod that has players trying to escape the horrors of the Rockwell County, called They Hunger. The trilogy was an unique mod - as it was an single-player story with original level along with character designs while using very little from the actual Half-Life game. Such apporach has made They Hunger one of the first and most popular Half-Life modifications of all time.
A combination of a very Edgar Allen Poe-ish atmosphere, haunting music, deceivingly ordinary level design, surprise, and most of all freaky noises really create the mood. Another very neat and very unique twist is the fact that the game is fought almost completely with melee weapons. In fact, you hardly ever get anything beyond an umbrella.
What made They Hunger stand out, and what makes it stand out today, is how the quality of its level and setpiece design rivals that of the game it’s based upon.
The mod starts out with an indulgent cutscene that includes a radio report discussing “atmospheric disturbances”, followed by long shots of your car’s fateful journey into a ravine.
Once you escape the water, you must cut through a churchyard where zombies burst out of coffins, before navigating a pumping station and an unstable volcanic crater as you attempt to reach the site of that broadcast.
